Beach Collage #2

This is the 2nd gift I gave my family this year.  We had the pictures taken our family vacation a couple of years ago but they seemed to disappear so I decided to make a collage of them. I'm a fan of black and white picutres and I liked how it turned out. If you want to see my other beach collage click here.

Family Christmas Present - 2012

This year I decided to do a book again using the very affordable  This is the front and back covers together (left is the back, right is the front). I wrote a short story that would only be funny to my family describing a typical day in a family with the same names as us but not like us at all (i.e. exactly opposite). I also made them one more thing, post coming soon.

The Fruit Book

This is the book I made my neice for Christmas this year. She loves fruit just like her Daddy (my little brother) so I thought it'd be fun to make a book about it.  If you'd like to buy this book you can for $5 at

5 things to do with $5

So we had spent all of our alloted Christmas money for my big brother except for $5 and we decided just to give it him in cash. To make it more fun/funny I was going to wrap it up with these silly suggestions. But we ended up doing something else for him so I didn't get to use it. I think he was happier with what we got him then he would have been with this :)

Ryleigh's Flash Cards

I made these flash cards for my niece for Christmas this year (as well as a book, post coming soon). Click on the picture to see all of them.

My parents (her grandparents) helped a lot with the concept, helping me come up with words, giving me feedback on my design ideas and the idea to make more in the future in installments so that within a few years she has a few sets. We all had so much fun with this and I hope she will too.

Christmas is Almost Here!

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas this year and enjoys times with friends and family!
I got this cute (I think) white pom-pom wreath at Target this year and I love it. I think it goes well with my tree. Oh and those sliver things are jingle bells if you can't tell.

My Little Brother the Connoisseur

This is the card I made for my little brother this year.  When I started thinking about him (which is how I always come up with my cards) I thought about how he likes good coffee, good wine, and on and on.

My Sister-In-Law

This is the card I made for my sister-in-law's birthday this year.  She's the kind of person who always knows what to get someone for a present, or what food people will like, she just has a knack for those sort of things. She has made a great addition to our family.  And this year on vaction she made us some delicous smoothies, thus the front of her card.

The Smartest thing You Never Said - Thanskgiving

I like to make funny place settings for our family for our holiday meals and this is what I made for Thanksgiving this year.  I got the idea and template for the turkey from and came up with phrases that each of us should have said (thus the smartest thing we never did). Everyone knew who they were immediately :)

My funny Mom :)

This is the card I made for my Mom's birthday this year. When my brothers and I were growing up, we'd be like, ooh lets go and get some ice cream and she'd say "let's not an say we did."

Not all the time of course, we did get to do things, but she liked to say this on occassion when she wasn't going to let us and it just seemed to me a particularly awful thing to say.

But now when I think back over my life I realize that was my mom having fun, making a no into a more fun way of saying no. And that is very much my mom. She's always had a way of lightening the mood about things and its one of the many things I really appreciate about her today.

Potato and Mushroom Pizza

Yet another pizza.  I kind of love pizzas because they're so easy and versatile and its like there are endless possibilities.  And the left overs are easily transportable for work lunches and I think taste just as good cold.  This one's different though.  Delicous left over but not cold, needs to be reheated, preferably in the oven. Here you go.

2 - 7 in. pizza crusts
Olive oil cooking spray
2 tsp. olive oil
1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
1 clove garlic
2 small - medium gold potatoes
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup + 2 tbsp. white wine
8 oz. mushrooms, trimmed and quartered
1 tablespoon chopped thyme
1/4 cup + 2 tbsp. shredded red. fat mozarella
1/4 cup shredded parmesan

Preaheat oven to 425.

Spray crusts with olive oil spray and bake in oven 5-10 minutes till lightly browned, then remove from oven.

Add olive oil, onions and garlic to a skillet and cook over low heat. While they are cooking. peel and chop the potatoes.  Add to the skillet. Season generously with salat and pepper.  Cover with a lid if you have it or tin foil if not.  Let cook for about 10 min.

Meanwhile melt butter in a non-stick skillet over medium - medium low heat. Add mushrooms and thyme and cook for 6 minutes or till mushrooms are tender.  Stir in 2 tbsp. white wine and continue cooking till most of the liquid is evaporated. *

When your 10 minutes is up on the potatoes remove the lid/foil and gently stir in 1/4 cup white wine.  Turn heat up to medium low and let pototates continue to cook till tender and most of the liquid is evaparoted (5-10 minutes more).

Top each crust with 2 tsbp each of the mozarella and parmesan.  Divide potatoes and mushrooms evenly between the two.  And then top each with 1 more tbsp. mozarella.

Bake at 425 for 10 mintes and then broil for 3.

Then enjoy.

*Note - The mushroom portion of this recipe is slightly adapted from an Everyday Food recipe you can see here.

Cheeseburger Pizza - kinda

I call it "Cheesburger Pizza  - kinda" cause while I was eating it the first time I made it I kept thinking "this kinda reminds me of a cheeseburger."  Not obviously cheesburger, but kinda.  I really enjoyed it. And as with all pizza's, it's easily customizable but here's how I made it. I made two mini pizzas but just double or so the ingredients for a full sized pizza.

2 - 7 in store-bought pizza crusts
olive oil spray
1/4 lb ground round
1/2 of a decent sized yellow onion, chopped
1 or 2 cloves of garlic, minced
1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper
1 1/2 cups grape tomatoes
1 tsp sugar
Basil to taste
Salt & Pepper to taste
1/2 cup shredded 2% mozzarella
2 tablespoons shredded 2 % cheddar

Heat oven to 425.

Brown meat with the onions, garlic and bell pepper.  While the meat is browning, loosely puree the tomatoes in a food processor.

Wipe out any fat in the pan (there isn't much with ground round) with a paper towel and add the pureed tomatoes and sugar.  Season with basil, salt & pepper. Let cook on low heat for 10 minutes or so.

Spray both crusts with the cooking spray and then top each with half of the meat mixture and then half of the cheeses.

Bake for about 9 minutes. then broil for about 3.

Let cool for a few minutes, then slice and enjoy.

Calories per pizza: about 400.

I didn't mention in this post (the birthday cake book that I made for my neices birthday) that I was only a few months late in sending it to her. So I made this card to go with it for her parents.

Very Short Hair

There are several things I love about it. It doesn't hide anything. Its simple and I think that that simplicity is beatiful. But not dull simplicity, classic and clean simplicity.  It kind of reminds me of the way I described a summer morning at the beach in this post.  I made this collage to put where I get ready in the morning, I love the black and white and simplistic beauty of it.

The Birthday Cake

When my niece was about a year and a half old I was about to make a birthday cake for three of my family members (her grandma, her mom & her dad) who had birthdays around that time. And she saw that and wanted to help me.

So for her second birthday I made her this book commemerating that cake baking adventure we had.  She of course didn't do any of these things by herself but was very involved and did an impressive job with the candles. It was so much fun for both of us :)

And from these pictures which I obviously drew myself you can tell why I call myself an unartistic artist. Oh and the empahsis on yellow is because its her favorite color.

Annivesary Ballad

This is the card I made for my parent's 42nd anniversary this year. My parents first met when they ran in to eachother on their school playground in the 3rd grade. It was not love at first sight but love did come many years later. Thus the text of this silly "ballad."

My Brother the Foodie

This is the front of the card I made for my brother this year.  I realize the original commercial said Mikey didn't like anything but I changed it to celebrate my brother's adventerous nature. One of the ways that manifests itself in him is his love of food and fearless and unhibited love of food most people would run away from.

Happy 4th! Enjoy the Mid-Week Holiday!

As I've said before the 4th of July is also my dad's birthday and this is the card I made for him this year.  They're all pictures I found online that represent a few snippets of my dad's life, like bumping into my mom on the playground in the 3rd grade, later impressing her by catching a bug in his bare hand, and then driving off the side of the road when she told him she didn't love him.  Of course it all worked out in the end and they went on to have one of the best love stories!

Anyway, hope every does enjoy the holiday!

The Wonderful Thing about Fathers

Well there are lots of wonderful things about dads.  One of the wonderful things my dad does (which is what the card I made him this year has to do with) is send out his daily devotional thoughts, which aren't cheesy and always make me think. One he did recently made me think of Ps. 65:8 which talks about God making the dawn and sunset shout for joy, thus the picture above, the front of his card.

I didn't want to do real pictures of sunsets and dawns with a verse over them because that just gives me the same kind of feeling as tv evangelists (I know I'm wierd). So that's why I did these pictures just using shapes and colors.  It felt less cheesy and I like the way it represents dawn and sunset even though its not as pretty as the real thing.

Wow Mom

I was just working on my Father's Day post for this year when I realized I never posted for Mother's Day this year.  And becuase my mom is very special to me as well I decided to post it late.  She's a great mom and I wanted to make sure she knew it this year :) This is the front of her card. It's a little blurry here but it looked better in real life.

I made this card for my grandparents to say thanks for their Christmas present to me this year.  They always appreciate letters and cards and my grandmother can't see very well so I usually try to make cards for them bold shapes and colors so she can at least get a glimpse.

2012 is here!

I made this post card to text to my family. Hope 2012 is a great year for everyone!
